Columbus settles lawsuit with man claiming he was unlawfully arrested

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The city of Columbus settled a lawsuit with a man who claimed he was unlawfully arrested.

This incident all started in May 2020 when Odis Latham was shot to death in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express.

Columbus police arrested Michael Guyse and charged him with manslaughter. A grand jury did not indict Guyse.

During the investigation, he claimed officers violated his constitutional rights. He also claimed self-defense under Mississippi’s castle doctrine law.

Guyse claimed Latham got in his vehicle after breaking into others in the parking lot and that he feared for his life.

Guyse’s attorney, Jeff Hosford, said the amount of the settlement was confidential.
