Crews removes CUPOLA from old Lee County Courthouse Dome

LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – It has topped the old Lee County Courthouse for more than a century, but this weekend, it was taken down as part of a major renovation.

Crews removed the CUPOLA from atop the old Lee County Courthouse Dome. The cupola, a decorative rounded vault sitting on top of the dome, was taken off for repairs.

This drone video was provided by Robinson and Associates and shows crews preparing to remove the cupola and the actual removal with a crane.

The cupola has crowned the old courthouse since the early 1900s and survived the deadly Tupelo tornado of 1936.

The top of the Lee County courthouse is prominent in old photos and is even featured in the background in the hit movie “Elvis” by Baz Luhrman.

The old courthouse is undergoing exterior repairs, including the roof, the stairs, and other features on the outside.

On Wednesday, we will have a full story about the removal of the cupola and the renovations of the historic building.
