MACON, Miss. (WCBI) – They were sending a message of courage and hope on Monday in Macon.

Community Counseling Services teams up with leaders in Noxubee County to break the silence surrounding Domestic Violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

People in Macon kicked things off with a balloon release.

Dorothy Sanders, the victim advocate coordinator for Lowndes County, says cases of domestic abuse have been on the rise during the pandemic.

And she urges victims of abuse to come forward.

“They don’t need to be scared, but I can understand the reason why they are scared because it’s stepping into a new ground of life. And they don’t know how they are going to survive without that other income. We are there to help them to be able to live a productive life, so we will help them in any area that they need,” said Dorothy Sanders.

Shareka Johnson with Community Counseling was the featured speaker and Macon Mayor Buzz McGuire read a Proclamation from the city at today’s event.
