Macon police investigate fatal shooting on Martin Luther King Drive

MACON, Miss. (WCBI) – A shooting Saturday night in Macon left one person dead and another injured.

The shooting happened around midnight on Martin Luther King Drive.

Noxubee County Coroner R.L Calhoun said 32-year-old Michael Taylor died at the Noxubee General Hospital from his injuries.

A 16-year-old was taken to Jackson and was stable at the last report.

Police Chief Davine Beck said this shooting came just four days after an unrelated shooting a block over from the crime scene.

“This was a deadly shooting. And sadly, a young man got shot multiple times and did not survive his injuries. It can be me today and it can be you tomorrow,” Beck said.

Calhoun said the violence is the worst it has been during his whole career, and they need to find a solution before they lose their community.

“It’s hard because everyone is afraid of retaliation if they talk to law enforcement. They are just afraid. So, we try to assure them that we are trying to be there with them as much as we can, as close as we can. But don’t be silent. Because we are trying to save other lives including your own,” Calhoun said.

Montrell Rucker is a local pastor, who knows all too well the impact of gun violence.

“It’s a personal tragedy and it’s heartbreaking for this type of crime to be happening over and over continuously in a small town. It’s kind of personal to me I guess. Because less than 200 feet from where we are standing, I lost a close friend of mine who was shot down right here,” Rucker said.

Rucker’s church recently held a restoration conference to look at ways it can impact the community.

He said it will take everyone working together to end the violence.

“We are trying to prepare ourselves spiritually and mentally to come out into the streets and witness to a lot of these young men. I believe we as believers should get more involved in the community. Hopefully, we could cut down on a lot of these crimes. It’s going to take a community effort,” Rucker said.

Now, Beck did say that the suspect in this investigation later called 911 and turned himself in.

At this time no charges have been filed.
