Michelle Powell starts Hearts Across the Holidays

CALEDONIA, Miss. – Just a few weeks ago, Michelle Powell jump started hearts across the holidays.

The idea for the cause came after she told her husband she wanted to send a lady a Christmas card, in which her husband agreed and sparked the idea of something bigger.

“I said I wanted to send a card to somebody that I see had posted on another post about adopting a family,” said Powell. “The woman was older. It was just her and her husband, and she had given her address and requested a gift, which I couldn’t give gifts, but I said I’d like to send her a Christmas card. And he said, ‘I think that’s a great idea, and you should do that.’ ”

Cards have always been something that put a smile on her face, as her mom has always sent her one and now, she wishes to encourage others to spread the joy of holiday cards. With hearts across the holiday, the goal is to reach cards out to those who might be alone for the holidays, or anyone who you want to remind that they’re thought of and cared about.

“Doing this one little thing that hopefully will help people to feel loved and just to know that they haven’t been forgotten,’ said Powell. “But I think that the cards is the connection. The hello, that tells a person, somebody thought of me. And I don’t have to know them to think of them. So hopefully, just by receiving that card, walking to their mailbox and finding a card, they can feel like they are not alone in whatever is going on in their life.”
