Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science hosts annual Math Superstars competition

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Math can be fun and rewarding. That’s part of the lesson of the day at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. On Friday,  MSMS hosted its annual Math Superstars competition.

Students from 14 schools as well as home school groups have been practicing “fun” math at their schools.

On Friday, October 23rd, the best from those schools went head-to-head in a little friendly competition.

The problems were created by MSMS math students.

Top individual winners walked away with medals. The top school took home a trophy.

For organizers, it’s a way to get students involved in math early and see at as something more than just something they “have” to do at school.

“I hope they realize that math is so much more fun than just the math they do for their state test. I want them to love math. I want it ti be something that’s more than just a grade, and something they can see themselves as – as a mathematician, by doing math that is meaningful to them.”

After the competition was over, there were other games and activities developed by the MSMS students.
