Mississippi State continues work towards expanding Veterinary School
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State is currently undergoing a $50 million expansion for various clinical and research facilities.
Mississippi State is home to one of the largest veterinary schools in the country. Ongoing construction will soon expand the size, along with the opportunities of the program. MSU Animal Health Center Director Heath King spoke on the progress.
“First part of that project is actually building a new farm animal hospital and outpatient cattle handling facility,” said King. “In conjunction with that, because of the location of that hospital we’ve moved the equine entrance to a new location on the facility, and we’re in the process of putting in a laminitis evaluation area, immediately adjacent to that entrance.”
Construction also includes new private consultation rooms, and upgrades to the small animal hospital. The Small Animal Hospital is still in the early stages, but the current plans for it include the expansion of the ER & ICU, along with moving specialty services like oncology and dermatology closer to the patient waiting areas.
The laminitis center will be the Nancy Fair Link Laminitis Center and will be a big factor for the school.
“The laminitis center is actually the only laminitis center in the United States,” said King. “So, we’re looking at how better to prevent that condition, and how better to treat that condition, which is extremely painful and can be quite debilitating in horses.”
The current expansion projects are seen to better the overall experience for the public, clients, students and veterinary industry.
