MSMS’ Tales from the Crypt research project kicks off 37th year

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The 37th Annual Tales from the Crypt research project kicked off Wednesday, August 20, at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library.

41 juniors from Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science will research a person or document from Columbus history.

The year-long project starts with students writing a research paper on their subject in the Fall and ends with a select group performing in a dramatic monologue presentation as the historical figures.

MSMS History teacher and Tales from The Crypt Director Chuck Yarborough says it helps the students develop leadership skills and learn how to contribute to the community.

“I’m really looking forward to presentation. That’s one reason I really wanted to join Tales was because of the physical (activity) and being able to present in front of an audience and be able to share my person’s story to other people,” said MSMS junior Clara Grace Rogers from Morton, Mississippi.

“I’m looking forward to the research paper. I really like writing, and I really think history is the subject that I haven’t delved into very well because it just haven’t been of interest to me. And so, now that I have this opportunity to be creative and research a subject specific to only myself and instead of a general project, I think it will be really fun and really get back into history like I want to,” said MSMS junior Amy Cancellare from Starkville, Mississippi.

MSMS’ Tales from the Crypt will also be featured in a film in the Richmond International Film Festival in September in Virginia.

Th Spring 2027 Tales from the Crypt performance will be held at Friendship Cemetery where some of the research subjects are buried.

The performance dates are March 31 and April 2, 7, & 9.
