Some Lowndes County high school students got a reality check today.
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-
Some Lowndes County high school students got a reality check Friday.
The Junior Auxiliary of Columbus, BankFirst, and the Lowndes County Career Technical Center teamed up to host the annual Reality Fair.
Juniors and Seniors were given an occupation, and the salary that goes along with it, and then taken through a monthly budget process where they find out what their “bills” add up to.
After they’ve paid their bills, they spin the “Wheel of Chance” that has several different scenarios. Some are positive and add money to their bottom line. Others are negative and cost them.
The idea is to give the students an idea of what “real world” costs are and to help them prepare.
“I think that it’s really important for kids to learn the value of money. I know you think…You don’t realize how much things cost sometimes, so I think this really gives ’em a wake-up callof how expensive it is to live.”
After the kids went through their monthly expenses, representatives from BankFirst gave them strategies for saving for their future.
The Junior Auxiliary sponsors this program each year.
