The City of Columbus is searching for a new accountant

COLUMBUS, Miss (WCBI)-  The City of Columbus is renewing its search for an accountant.

The city had advertised for a Senior Accontant to assist Chief Financial Officer Jim Brigham.

The initial search had turned up a candidate for the job, and reportedly had Brigham’s recommendation.

During an executive session at a Monday’s special call meeting, the City Council decided to readvertise the position.

Mayor Stephen Jones believes the city needs someone in the role to help the city stay current on its financial responsibilities.

“It’s very critical. Mr. Jim came to us, we didn’t have a CFO at all, nobody in that position, so the audits fell  behind due to that reason, and it’s been difficult trying to catch up and do his regular job, you know. So, you know, we got caught up that year; ’cause when he came, you gotta understand, he didn’t know where anything was. We actually had a bunch of new people up here working. So, nobody knew anything we had a new administration that had just taken over. So, for him to come in and get us where we are now, and we built up a nest egg. So, Mr. Jim has done a great job. It’s trying to get him the help that’s needed to be able to go ahead and finish these audits. And get caught up on the audits, so we’re not facing these issues anymore.”

Mayor Jones would like to see someone in the position soon, but it is not known what the timeline will be for the position.
