Tupelo Fire Department officially opens revamped Fire Station 5

TUPELO, Miss. – The Tupelo Fire Department officially opened their rebuilt and revamped Fire Station 5 today.

Tupelo Fire Chief Brad Robinson said that plans for the $5 million project started back in the summer of 2024, which features a much more spacious station, as well as a 75 by 80 storage building. What is now a state-of-the-art fire station replaces the old station 5 that was built in 1970. With the massive upgrade, plenty of different factors came with the renovations. Top priority for the new building was making more room to maneuver, as firefighters had to back in from the street at the old station.

“The room is the top thing on my agenda,” said Robinson. “But the health and safety for the guys as well. All the systems that we have in place, we have card reader access to make entry into the station more secure. In the past, just being able to get the station locked down was a chore within itself. So being able to do that here and now we can see who goes in and out. There’s cameras all the way around the station.”

Other features with the new station include exhaust rooms, decon rooms for fire fighters to clean up and wash their gears, individual dorm rooms and a fast-moving roll up doors that can raise up in 4 seconds to help with rapid response.

“They do have individual dorm rooms,” said Robinson. “And it’s not to be luxurious. It’s so that when these guys and females go to these traumatic incidents, they can come back and decompress. I want my firefighters here to be physically fit firefighters and to handle whatever the job is, but I want them to be mentally fit as well.”

The revamped station 5 will be located on the south end of the city at 2667 South Green Street, right by the old station 5.
