PONTOTOC COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s fall in Mississippi and the perfect time to explore the state’s agricultural attractions. Pumpkin patches and corn mazes can be found throughout the area during October.

At Wise Family Farm in northern Pontotoc County kids are exploring the fields, testing their skills in the corn maze, and even trying their hand at some hillbilly golf. The Wise family has farmed this land since 1926.

“My grandfather raised a family of six children here and back in that time it was subsistence living. The farm has been in the family since that time. My father farmed it, my brother and I both farmed it, and we’ve kind of come full circle now. My grandfather used to grow all these crops we’re growing today to educate the public. The corn they grew, they either ate it or fed it to the animals. Cotton was a cash crop, and they grew sorghum for syrup like we’re doing,” said owner Stanley Wise.

Many girl and boy scout troops, schools and churches visit the farm to learn where our food comes from and the hard work involved in farming. The Wise family history runs deep here as well. The family store from 1946 has been recreated, and the original Bethany Primitive Baptist Church is used for live music Saturday nights.

“It’s really beautiful out here. The kids really enjoy playing on the tire swings,” said first time visitor Deanna Jordan, of Myrtle.

“We’ve been having a good time just coming out, picking pumpkins and spending time with our church family,” said 16-year-old Jessica Gonzales of Myrtle.

“It feels really good to be giving something back to the community. We’re not in it to make a lot of money. We need to make some money to pay the bills, but it’s more like a family tradition now. Our kids and grandkids are getting involved in it. Our family has always been open and hospitable and we’re happy to have people come out and enjoy what the Lord has blessed us to have,” Wise said.

Wise Family Farm will be open for fall activities through the month of October. Call (662) 488-5733 or visit, http://wisefarmer.com/ for more information. They are located at 291 Shady Grove Road.
