Visit Columbus holds Art and Antique Sale this weekend
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Art and antique aficionados have been waiting for this weekend in Columbus. The annual Columbus Art and Antique Show is getting underway at the Columbus Arts Council.
Fran Riddell loves coming to the Antique Show in Columbus. Riddell and her husband live in Canton, but travel around 15 states where she shows off her one-of-a-kind jewelry using freshwater pearls.
Her connection to Columbus runs deep. She and her husband lived here before moving to Canton, and her love for Columbus never stopped.
Now the annual show brings together her two loves: Columbus and antiques.
“I’ve been coming to the show — first I used to come as a guest when it was at the Trotter Center. And then more recently as a vendor, I’ve been coming for several years. And doing my best to promote Columbus and the show.”
Riddell had a long career in marketing and advertising, but health problems forced her to rethink her work. She pivoted and began her jewelry line. All because of her sister’s request.
“And from there, I put it on Facebook, and that was amazing to me because my Facebook page blew up. And people were making comments on it, and I loved Facebook because when you’re out in the country as we are, that provides a platform, a medium, for you to interact with people. So, it occupied my time, and I thought, well, perhaps this is what God intends for me to do.”
For 25 years, the Antique Show held at the Columbus Arts Council has been the place to shop for those one-of-a-kind, unique pieces. This year, Visit Columbus Director Frances Glenn said it coincides with Game Day Kickoff, and both events combined are sure to bring many into the city. Not only that, it helps bring in more to Columbus’s economy as the vendors have to pay sales tax on all sales made and have a business license.
“Saturday, we hope people will come downtown eat, shop with all of our local stores as well as the antique store that’s here through Saturday.”
Whatever your fancy is, it’s sure to be discovered this weekend at the antique sale.
The antique sale will run from 10 a.m. until 5 pm Friday, and 10 am until 4 pm on Saturday.
