Warm but Cloudy

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — We are staying pretty warm but cloudy across the area today, but a cold front moving in tomorrow will drop those temperatures a bit.

MONDAY: The high temperature for today is 80°, about eight degrees above average for this time of year. It will be warm but cloudy throughout the day, though we may see a break or two in the clouds in the late afternoon or evening. It will also be pretty windy, with sustained southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph. Wind gusts could reach 20 mph at times.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy skies will continue through the night, helping to prevent temperatures from dropping much. The overnight low will be around 63°. Winds will persist through the night at 10 mph out of the southeast, with gusts up to 20 mph.

TUESDAY: One last day of well-above-normal temperatures, with the high reaching 81° before the cold front passes through. Southerly flow will bring moisture from the Gulf into our area, increasing rain potential as the cold front approaches. As a result, isolated showers could begin to pop up across our area through the afternoon. We’re anticipating a pretty linear system of rain and thunderstorms along the frontal boundary. Therefore, rain coverage will continue to increase in the couple of hours ahead of the frontal passage.

Cold Front Impacts

Mild instability combined with high moisture will bring the possibility of severe weather. However, it remains limited since we’re not expecting this system to move near until well after peak heating for the day. Thus, only a marginal risk for severe weather is in effect for the westernmost edges of our area. The main threat we’re expecting for tomorrow is an increased chance for flash flooding, with damaging winds also a limited concern. Winds will be out of the southeast at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph. Although this is not likely at all, we also cannot rule out the possibility that a weak tornado embedded within the line of thunderstorms could spin up.
