Work is underway on Old River Bridge in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Miss, (WCBI) – Work has started in earnest on the repairs to the Old River Bridge in Columbus.

After getting barges in place last week, Malouf Construction has begun its first full week of work on the bridge along Columbus’s Riverwalk.

Mayor Keith Gaskin updated the progress on his Facebook page.

Crews are installing “spuds” that will allow barges to rise and fall with the water level.

They will then begin the underwater work, and work their way up.

If there are no other delays and the weather permits, the repairs should be finished by the end of May.

Gaskin said he will be posting regular updates about the repairs on his Facebook page, but advises people to stay clear of the area while construction continues.
