Tupelo Discusses Archiving City Leaders’ E-mails, Text Messages

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Tupelo could become the first city in the state to meet new state directives to archive city leaders’ e-mails and text messages.

Tupelo City Council members got their first look this week at proposed policies for what is city business, how the materials will be kept and public access.

The decision comes after the state Ethics Commission ruled earlier this year the city violated state law when it refused a Daily Journal request for text message records. Since then, the state has notified all 400 cities of the rules concerning electronic communications. So far, none are in full compliance for archiving those records.
