TUPELO, Miss. – (WCBI) This weekend, the arts will be showcased during an event in Tupelo.

Dancers with the Civic Ballet have been putting in about 20 hours every week Practicing for the Tupelo Arts Showcase. The program brings performers from music, poetry dance and art together for a diverse evening.

“Not only can they mingle together, we make it available to every audience, every demographic.”

Jan Dijkwel is the artistic director of the Civic Ballet. This is the first time the Civic Ballet has been part of the Arts Showcase. Dijkwel hopes the event will expose the art of ballet to a new audience.

“There are maybe some of the men who would like, rather to go hunting or other things like that, the say, ‘oh, ballet, that’s not for me.’ But I believe if they will come they would have an enjoyable time,” adds Dijkwel.

Dancers say they have worked hard for the showcase and they promise some surprises, even for ballet aficionados.

“Not very many people in Tupelo Mississippi have been able to say they’ve seen opera, ballet or blues all in the same night,” says Rachel Williams, dancer.

“We’re doing a little bit of everything we will have our traditional classical ballet with tutus and point shoes and it will be beautiful and then we are going a little more modern as the show goes on and we will end it with a great finale which will be a surprise for everyone,” adds Hannah Tybor, dancer.

The Arts Showcase is free, and begins 7 p.m Saturday at Tupelo’s Link Centre.
