Fireworks business welcomes shoppers

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The New Year is around the corner, and people have already started planning how they want to celebrate.

Employees at Orbit Fireworks have been welcoming shoppers since last week.

“Most of the time when we first open up, it’s pretty much like (we) put out our stock, start putting out and getting everything set up for everybody to come in for New Year’s,” said Candi Nabors, an Orbit Fireworks employee.

Candi Nabors with Orbit said each fireworks season starts with a similar pace, both for Fourth of July and New Year’s.

However, she said there are some customers who like to stock up before Christmas.

“It’s about the same at first… (it’s) kind of slow. But you have some people that come in and do the little stocking stuffers, or they buy the kids the fireworks because that’s what they want,” said Nabors.

The foot traffic picks up closer to New Year’s Eve.

“We prepare for the 31st. The 31st is when everybody comes in. I guess they just like all coming in at one time,” said Nabors

And though it may be a large crowd at once, Nabors says the customers enjoy talking with each other as they shop and that she is grateful for them.

Some have their eyes on the usual.

“People like to still buy the 500 grams, light it one time and be done with it. But the variety pack is pretty much the main seller,” said Nabors.

Orbit closes daily at 9 pm, but they will be open a little later New Year’s Eve.

Workers say to keep your fireworks in a dry area.

Also, most area towns and cities prohibit shooting fireworks within the city limits.
