Area law enforcement reminds people to be especially mindful when on the roads during school hours
OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – We’re a few weeks into the new school year, but some drivers are still adjusting to the change in traffic.
Area law enforcement officers are reminding people to pack their patience when they’re on the roads during school hours.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is saying to be especially mindful of school buses on the road.
They are making frequent stops, and when they stop, you have to stop too. That includes on four-lane roads.
Officers are saying there has been an issue with people passing when the buses start flashing their lights and slowing down before they come to a stop.
“When it comes to school buses, when they hit their lights, hey! Let’s stop! Remain at least 10 feet from ’em, especially when the Stop sign comes out. We have to stop, because even though you may have seen a child come on, you don’t know if a child’s running behind, losing a backpack, trying to get off the school bus, and there you are,” said MHP Trooper Clay Flake.
The Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies will be stepping up patrol efforts around school zones and along the bus routes to make sure people are driving safely.
