Parents and students express their concerns about off-campus housing
STARKVILLE, Miss. — As the first day of classes approaches for students at Mississippi State University, some parents already have concerns about their children’s college experience.
Posts circulating online have been critical of an apartment complex’s handling of its move-in process for new residents.
This all started with posts on Facebook from parents expressing their frustrations about the cleanliness of Yugo apartments.
Some of the students are already moving out of their apartments.
Students in an off-campus apartment complex said the housing conditions were unlivable when they arrived.
“So we all banded together, parents and students, to clean our apartment,” Favre said. “As we were cleaning our kitchen, that’s when we found cockroaches; they carry diseases, and we didn’t want them in our food. We shouldn’t have to do this, but we had to put all of our food in a sealable container just to make sure no bugs got on them.”
London Favre and her mother are among several students and parents who have expressed their concerns online about the conditions at the Yugo apartments.
“Every single night since we have moved in, we’ve been having to deep clean the kitchen, make sure there are no bugs anywhere, we leave the lights on so they don’t come back out,” Favre said.
Parents stated that they have never seen conditions handled in this manner.
“No student should have this be the norm for them, and I think MSU should take more action to make sure that their off-campus housing is livable for students because even though it’s not owned or managed by them, the students coming to MSU should expect cleanliness and safety,” Favre said.
Parents and students are advising others looking for housing to do their research..
“I say explore your options more thoroughly and look at reviews,” Favre said. “If I had known Yugo was going to be like this upon moving in, I would have looked at more reviews, I mean just looking around you can see there’s trash everywhere and there’s roaches, water damage, I just want people to know make sure you are thoroughly thinking about the spaces you are moving in. No one should have to deal with this.”
Favre said she found out about Yugo apartments from an off-campus housing table on the MSU campus.
