Mississippi State University kicks off Career Expo week
STARKVILLE, MS – The Career Center at Mississippi State University hosted day one of its three-day career expo Tuesday at Humphrey Coliseum.
The event is a way to connect students with future employers and possibly find an internship, co-op, or even possibly a full-time job. It’s also a chance for companies to grow their brand. The event hosted 102 registered companies today, with around 230 unique companies being represented this week. Career Center Executive Director Bethany Mills talked about the event and what it should mean to students.
“They want to get that applied experience,” said Mills. “They’re getting great classroom education, but then how can you apply the skills of what you’re learning into, like, the real world? And so, to be able to get that experience and make those connections here for students, so they can amplify their resume and gain great skills through internships and co-ops. I think it’s a pretty huge goal for students as well.”
The event presents students who’ve never been to a career, and some who have seen success in the past through the expo. Senior Industrial Engineer major Nand Khambhati is an example of the program benefiting students. Today was his 5th time attending a career expo at Mississippi State.
“Last year I got a co-op at Mercedez-Benz,” said Khambhati. “I came over here looking for a co-op internship. And I talked to Mercedes, like, at the booth, and I just really liked what they were about. They offered me a position to co-op there last spring, and I did it and it was amazing. I got so much hands-on experience seeing how a car was built, seeing the manufacturing side of the engineering and all that.”
The career expo will continue tomorrow and Thursday from 12-4, with tomorrow featuring STEM and CALs, and Thursday featuring all majors.
