Aberdeen High School Freshman Seminar students present Career and Entrepreneurial Boards

ABERDEEN, Miss. – Freshman seminar classes at Aberdeen High School presented storyboards for different careers and entrepreneurships they currently wish to peruse.

Some of the boards featured careers such as engineering, law, medicine, and even sports. Along with the boards, students had to create career neck ties and hats. Students presented other things such as jewelry and food items. Tammie Nichols is one of the freshman seminar teachers at the high school.

“Every freshman seminar has to do an expo,” said Nichols. “But they have a vision board that they showcase. They have a career tie, they have a hat and they must have a product. I have a nuclear engineer, and he really got excited. He was like ‘they make a lot of money’ but they have to learn the educational requirements as well.”

While this might only be a freshman class, Nichols said the students have been excited to learn more about potential fields, along with presenting their interests. Students don’t have long time in the class however, as it’s only a 9-week course. Nichols says she also tries to teach them some practical skills to land those jobs, such as professionalism, how to give a handshake, good eye contact, and a 30 second elevator pitch, because sometimes they only get one chance to make a lasting impression.

“We’re just not preparing them for academically,” said Nichols. “But life beyond high school. And as you can see, with the ties and the hats, it just brings out the best of them. With them saying ‘I did that. I can accomplish it.’ And so, in my freshman seminar class, we have three letters. I will say G.B.G, and they say, ‘Go be great’. So, every time they walk out of that door, I let them know that you go from good, better, best. Never let it rest until the good gets better, and the better gets best.”

The students only had a week and a half to put the event together, as Nichols said she’s proud of her students and what they were able to put together.
