Dancing with the King helps bring ballroom dance to local schools
TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – For Drew Horn, it has been a busy couple of months.
“We started the lessons in August,” Horn said.
Horn is one of this year’s celebrity dancers in the annual “Dancing with the King” extravaganza. Proceeds from the event help take ballroom dance lessons into area schools.
Drew Horn’s son, Dawson, is a New Albany High School student, and an Elvis Tribute Artist. Drew says he accepted the invite for Dancing with the King, because the event promotes arts in the area.
“The performing arts has always been something special to me and my family is big in high school musicals, season ticket holders at The Orpheum, the performing arts is just as important as reading, math and science to be a well rounded individual,” Horn said.
Drew will be dancing a foxtrot to a song from Baz Luhrman’s most recent Elvis movie.
“I will be dancing to ‘Wearing that Nightlife Look.” It is a mash up of Wearing that Loved on Look and Nightlife, bit horns, swing in it,” Horn said.
Each dancer is paired with a pro partner, and Tammy Wilson is Drew’s instructor. Their ballroom dance routine will be performed at the event, in front of family, fans and friends. Wilson says Dancing with the King is a fun and great way to introduce ballroom dance to a new, younger audience.
“That is what brings all of us as a staff joy, when we go into the schools, they have seen dancing, they sometimes ask, why aren’t we doing the Tik Tok dance, but our whole goal is to expose them to something new. And we really want to expose ballroom dancing to kids who wouldn’t have the opportunity otherwise,” Wilson said.
Drew promises a great show the night before Halloween.
“A day before Halloween, don’t know how many tricks we will have up our sleeve but will definitely be a treat to watch,” Horn said.
It all happens at The Tupelo Furniture Market.
