Students, fans and alumni have all jumped on the Maroon Friday trend.

Athletic Director Scott Stricklin has been one of the leaders of the Maroon Friday movement since it was born six years ago.

“We were just talking about ways we could get fans and alumni and students engaged a little bit more in showing their bulldog spirit and I had heard of another school that had done something similar and we thought what if we just asked people to wear maroon on Friday,” said Stricklin.

Fans from all over the world use social media to share how their celebrate Maroon Friday.

Stricklin says social media like facebook and twitter has helped the trend grow.

“Because you can show somebody in Paris in front of the Effile Tower wearing Mississippi State gear and you know there is somebody on the other side of the world doing something what you’re doing in Tupelo or Starkville or Jackson, wherever you are. So there is a community feel to it,” said Stricklin.

Around a dozen Starkville businesses also participate in Maroon Friday by becoming sponsors.

Deep South Pout is a sponsor and the store offers incentives for those who wear Maroon on Friday’s.

“Every Friday we all wear our Maroon Friday t-shirts like I have on and you can get these at Deep South Pout and basically all our customers come in and if they’re wearing maroon we give them a special discount off a certain item. So it’s just to promote Mississippi State,” said Carson Taylor, assistant manager at Deep South Pout.

But for all bulldog fans, Maroon Friday has grown to be another unique MSU tradition.

“Just like cowbells and bulldogs, Maroon Friday is part of being a Mississippi State fan,” added Stricklin.
