Lowndes County deputy resigns amid allegations of using racial slur

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Lowndes County deputy resigns amid an internal investigation over an alleged racial slur.

Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said there was an investigation underway when the deputy resigned. He did not release their name, citing a personnel matter.

Multiple sources told WCBI that the deputy was accused of using a racial slur toward an inmate.

Hawkins said due to the resignation the internal investigation was not able to be completed.

He said he took the allegations seriously and does not tolerate any employees using harmful or hurtful language.
