Police arrest a man on assault charges in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A man who allegedly assaulted Columbus Police is now in custody.

Columbus Police Officers got called out to the 900 block of 11th Street South this afternoon.

Concerned neighbors called them shortly after 1 about a man who was outside waving and shooting a gun.

CPD and residents say this is not the first time 58-year-old Tommy Earle Dora has done this.

When CPD tried to arrest Dora, he resisted and fought against the officers.

Officers said he has multiple charges.

“We had some of our CIT officers here. They were able to talk to him once we got him subdued, calm him down, de-escalate the situation, make the evaluation, and also with assistance from BMH,” said Chief Daughtry.

“This is an ongoing problem, and this is not just a problem happening in Columbus. We have a lot of individuals with mental issues that need proper help, but there is no funding for it. The city can’t fund; the city doesn’t have the resources to fund it. The county doesn’t have the resources to fund it. There are limited beds at the hospital, and it’s kind of tying our hands.”

The suspect was taken to the Baptist Golden Triangle for evaluation. It is not known what charges he will face at this time.
