Remembering those who lost their lives to gun violence
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Saturday, many came out to Propst Park to honor the lives of those who lost their lives due to gun violence.
Jacquel Brown, in partnership with Alderwoman Lavonne Latham Harris, held her annual Orange 4 Life event at Propst Park.
Brown held the event in honor of her son, nephews, and grandson, whose lives were lost due to gun violence.
“It’s National Gun Violence Awareness Day, and we all come out, the community comes out, and we just celebrate this day. I’m doing it in remembrance of not just my family, my son, and my grandson. Well, it’s two of my nephews, so I just come out and celebrate this day right here just to give back to the communities,” she said.
Speakers included Chief Joseph Daughtry and the entire Columbus Police Department, Assistant District Attorney Trina Davidson, Chief Charles Yarbrough, Mayor Stephen Jones, and many others.
Yarbrough told the story of losing his own son, Jarvis Gray, to gun violence while he was at work. Daughtry told the crowd that every time they have to tell a family their loved one isn’t coming home due to gun violence, it affects him and his entire staff.
He told those in attendance that the department is still praying for them and their hearts break for them.
