Salute to Lowndes County’s Finest Association hosts annual 9/11 luncheon
COLUMBUS, MS – Today marks the silver anniversary of one of the darkest moments in American history: 9/11.
Every year on 9/11, The Salute to Lowndes County’s Finest Association hots a luncheon at American Legion. The event is to honor those who served on ground on the horrific day, as well as those currently serving today. The association’s founder Mark Smith talked about today’s event.
“We’ve been doing this now for this our 25th anniversary,” said Smith. “Which is the 25th anniversary of 911. And so, it’s a time for us to bring them in, give them a good meal, lots of prizes, and gifts that we give them. It’s also to remind them that we also have the Salute to Lowndes County recovery and relief fund, which allows us to find financial assistance to them in a time of personal need.”
Mr. Smith served at Ground Zero with this year’s special guest at the event. That guest was Mario Zorovic, a retired member of the NYPD Emergency Service Unit who served on ground for Ground Zero. Mr. Zorovic shared his story with the first responders and military members at the event, as well as words of wisdom and encouragement.
“Worst day of my life in the police department,” said Zorovic. “But it also reminded me that I needed to know my job and do my job that day. I joined the New York City Police Department to help people. I always wanted to be in law enforcement. And here’s my opportunity to not just be a regular cop, but something a little bit more. I was always looking for the ultimate, the best that I can be in the department.”
9/11 is a day of remembrance and something that should never be forgotten.
