Video: Starkville Alderwoman, Mayor Support Removing State Flag

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Starkville Alderwoman Lisa Wynn wants to remove the state flag from city buildings.

She has crafted a resolution for city leaders to discuss at next week’s board meeting.

State law does not require a city to fly the flag.

The resolution states the confederate battle emblem, which is in the left corner of the flag, is a symbol of oppression, discrimination and division to many in the city.

The resolution also says the flag would not fly on city property until the emblem is removed.

Mayor Parker Wiseman tells WCBI he hopes the board will vote in favor of the measure.

“I think it will communicate the right message to the outside world that this is a community that is loving, kind, tolerant, and inclusive,” said Wiseman.

Wiseman says the state flag is hurtful and offensive to some.

He also hopes state leaders will eventually change the flag.
