STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A number of teachers, state leaders and community members came together for a Leadership training summit in Starkville.

The focus is to help local educators expand their leadership roles without leaving the classroom.

Teaching teachers to lead. This special summit in Starkville hosted by the U.S. Department of Education, is focused on helping teachers better help their students.

“We’re trying to figure out how we can leverage teacher leadership in the Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidation District, so we can better enable them to do work that will continue to support and sustain what they’re trying to do with their teacher leaders,” said Emily Davis with the U.S. Department of Education.

During the Leadership Lab, educators shared the successes and challenges experienced during the consolidation.

Students who came from the county school to Starkville High were also on hand to share what the consolidation means to them.

“I would say it has given me more opportunities. I have now exceeded well-beyond what I thought I could when I got here,” said Starkville High student Haley Ward.

This Leadership Lab also included input from state and local leaders on how teachers can better lead in the classroom.

Educators say this helps them see how they can better serve their students.

” Well from a teacher perspective, it allows us to remain in our classrooms and teaching kids, which is our passion and also to get some leadership experience and to be able to tap into our talents in other areas,” said science teacher Michael Adam.

“Teach To Lead” hosts summits throughout the United States where there is potential for teacher leadership to expand.

A number of local stakeholders were also invited to attend the summit.
