LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A Lowndes County man is recovering after being injured in a weekend shooting.

“I thank God my baby’s here,” said Sharon Durrah, the victim’s mother. “It’s a blessing my baby was able to make it through.”

Durrah says she’s grateful her 22-year-old son Tevin Harris is alive after being shot five times.

“He had the bullet in his neck, which damaged his vocal cord,” she said. “Now he has a trace in his throat. His voice is messed up.”

Durrah says she doesn’t know what led up to the Saturday shooting which not only hurt Tevin, but killed his best friend, Josh Richardson.

“My son was not a person that was violent with no one, and I just don’t think he deserved to be shot the way he was.”

Durrah says the violence – especially involving young people – needs to stop.

“They don’t need to be carrying guns around here,” Durrah said. “All they’re doing is messing up their life, taking another life.”

Durrah says her son will hopefully be released from the hospital in about a week, and will recover at home in Lowndes County.
