Video: Legislature Allows Amory to Levy Tourism Tax

JACKSON and AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — You may have to fork over a little extra for hotel rooms. The Mississippi Legislature passed Senate Bill 2919, which allows Amory Aldermen to levy a tax of as much as 2% on gross sales of motel and hotel room rentals, and on gross sales from restaurants. Funds gathered through the tax must be used to promote tourism through the Parks and Recreation Department. But the bill was not met with unanimous approval. Robert Tomey, who owns several McDonald’s franchises, including the one in Amory, said he felt the tax would burden the elderly and the poor in the area.
