ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) — Much like Lee County and Tupelo, Monroe County has adopted a benefits policy for members of law enforcement injured in the line of duty.

Monroe County Supervisors may not all agree on every issue as they conduct the business of the county, but one thing they do agree on, they want to do all they can to help men and women in law enforcement.

“Officers injured in the line of duty were eligible for workers comp benefits and whatnot, but the city doesn’t have any avenue to, for them to receive you know, their regular pay after they had used up their leave time and whatnot,” said Supervisor Billy Fitzpatrick/Monroe County.

Not expected to be a widely used policy, but very specific, targeting uniformed officers only.

“It has to be very specific circumstances for it to come into play. And you know we’ll probably look at some other departments, but we haven’t taken any action on any other department as of yet,” said Billy Fitzpatrick.

Enhanced benefits for other county employees like road crews and trash collectors are expected to be discussed at a later date.

“But you are just in the short-term trying to, you know level out their pay and not you know try to take care of them as best they can in a time of need,” said Billy Fitzpatrick.

Should the unthinkable happen like the injury of someone in uniform, the policy lends moral support to those who serve and protect.
