In his third start, Justify won the $1 million Santa Anita Derby, making this colt the 3-1 favorite.

Justify drew a favored post position – 7 – which has been the starting gate for six Derby winners, most recently 2007’s Street Sense. But that blessing also comes with the “Curse of Apollo”: no horse since Apollo in 1882 has won the Kentucky Derby without racing as a two-year old. (Magnum Moon is in the same boat.)
