Many families camp and celebrate Memorial Day at Lake Lowndes

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – With it being Memorial Day weekend, many families use camping as their traditional getaway.

Lake Lowndes had the perfect escape for those families.

Many people consider Memorial Day weekend the unofficial start to summer.

And staycations on the river or by the lake are how many families will come together this holiday weekend.

Dozens of families flood Lake Lowndes State Park for a weekend of fun.

“Now we are into camping and we just love gathering together, telling stories, laughing with each other, or laughing at each other,” Roger Lucas said. “Just having a good time.”

The campground allows the community to enjoy the outdoors on 150 acres of land.

On Memorial Day weekend, people travel from miles away to camp at the park.

On the lake, you can fish, boat, or bike ride.

Some have used camping at Lake Lowndes as their tradition for numerous years.

“I think more people should get out of the house and do activities like this,” Kirk Sudduth said. “It’s a good opportunity to learn new experiences and meet new people because you won’t meet a stranger out here.”

“I’m retired, so it is just a good relaxation to be out in the weather and enjoying my friends and having fun,” Mary Ferguson said.

While there is a lot of fun happening while they camp, these folks still remember the reason for the holiday.

“When I was a fourth grade student, there was about a young man that was killed in Vietnam War and that stuck with me and I’m now 67,” Sudduth said. “So that has stuck with me for all these years that a young man probably in his early 20’s died so that I could be here today, free. I’m doing what I like to do and enjoying freedom with my family and friends.”

“I’m former vet so it’s a good opportunity to remember everybody that came before me and those that gave the ultimate sacrifice.”

The Kampgrounds of America reports over 22 million households plans to camp over Memorial Day Weekend.
