Non profit aims for national park like experience at Brice’s Crossroads
Fundraising campaign underway to help add trails, signs and other features at the Civil War site
LEE COUNTY, MISS. (WCBI) – For Dwight Hardison, and other members of the Brice’s Crossroads Foundation, creating more opportunities for visitors to the Civil War battlefield site is a top goal.
“It is a unique position here, so many historical sites, Civil War, Revolutionary, whatever it might be, have been taken over by urban sprawl and such,” Hardison said.
The Brice’s Crossroads Foundation was formed in 2022 to promote and support interpretive and educational opportunities at Civil War-related sites in North Mississippi, with a main emphasis on the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads.
A fundraising campaign was recently announced, with a goal of one million dollars to add markers, explaining troop organization, movement, and other actions during the battle fought on June 10, 1864, along with hiking trails, and other features for visitors
Another goal of the fundraising campaign is to get replica cannons used on both sides, to help better tell the story of a decisive Civil War Battle fought in North Mississippi.
“Word got to the Southern side, there is a lot of Union movement coming this way. It was about a three-to-one ratio of Union to Southern, but it was a major victory for the Southern but in long run, even though it was a victory, they did keep Forrest busy, and he stayed off Sherman’s supply lines,” he said.
The foundation will seek donations from individuals and businesses, as well as any grants and government funding.
