CREATE Foundation provides valuable experience for local students
TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – As executive director of Good Samaritan Health Services, Hannah Maharrey wears a lot of hats. She has wanted to expand marketing efforts for the non profit, but it has been a challenge. Until Miracle Hollimon came on board as an intern.
‘I am an older millennial, so I am not completely useless when it comes to social media but some of the newer trends focused on short form reels, media, editing videos, Miracle has helped me improve those skills,” Maharrey said.
The Saltillo High School senior was recommended for the internship program by her college and career readiness teacher. Miracle works at Good Samaritan Health Services four days a week, at the clinic, which provides medical services for the working uninsured.
She says the internship is helping her prepare for college, and has also opened her eyes to the struggles faced by non profits.
“It has helped me with my communication skills, how to talk to people and I see at a lot of free clinics, funding is a problem, if you don’t have the funds, can’t keep the clinic open, the services we offer, I didn’t even know about those services,” Hollimon said.
Maharrey says the internship program helps businesses and non profits forge bonds with young people.
“We don’t have a lot of youth who come through here but that has been a wonderful part, connecting to young people in our communities, getting to know them and their goals,” Maharrey said.
Miracle’s internship wraps up at the end of this month. She will go to Ole Miss but promises to come back when she can, as a volunteer.
Miracle wants to be an OB GYN and will be taking pre med courses in college.
