City of Aberdeen celebrates the nation’s most important document

ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – Monroe County residents gathered in Aberdeen today to celebrate what many consider the nation’s most important document, The United States Constitution.

This year marks the 239th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution

Members of the Tombigbee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, along with members of the Cotton Gin Port Chapter DAR from Amory and the Sons of the American Revolution organized the event at the Aberdeen City Hall.

They were joined by area elected officials, law enforcement and residents from across the county.

A town crier read a proclamation from the Monroe County Board of Supervisors, and Mayor Dwight Stevens was presented an award for his contributions to patriotism and the City of Aberdeen.

Organizers say it’s important for everyone to understand the document that our nation’s laws and government are based on.

People of this country, all the people of this country, 350 of them there about, million, and everyone of ’em who’s a citizen, deserves to be treated as a citizen and subject to laws established by the laws of the Constitution. If you don’t understand what the laws of the Contitution are, get yourself a copy and read it. You’ll be surprised.”

The event also featured a flyover by the Aberdeen High School Sky Dawgs

September 17th through the 23rd is also recognized as Constitution Week.
