Younger talks Legislative priorities

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – State Senator Chuck Younger may be running for Northern District Transportation Commissioner next year, but he still has another legislative session ahead of him.

Younger, who serves as the Chairman of the Senate Highways and Transportation Committee spoke to the Columbus Rotary Club Tuesday.

He talked about some of the things state lawmakers have been able to get done the past few sessions.

He also mentioned a few things he would like to see prioritized in the coming session, such as a move to make Mississippi drivers get and *keep* liability insurance.

As for his committee’s focus, he says there is always a need for road repairs and maintenance, and the creation of new roads. That helped pave the way for his decision to seek the Transportation Commissioner post.

“It sounded like a good thing that could help our Golden Triangle area and North Mississippi in general. We’ve got a lot going on with all the industry and businesses coming in in our area, and up north in Tupeloand everywhere else, DeSoto County. I think that I could make a difference. I hope I can.”

Younger wasn’t the only person recognized at Rotary. WCBI’s very own Chief Photographer Ronnie Smith was named a Paul Harris Fellow.

Clubs often award this honor to non-Rotarians who show a strong commitment to community service and the values of Rotary.
