Trent Lott Will Vote For Donald Trump

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott says he will vote for Donald Trump for president, though he acknowledges he didn’t expect the New York businessman to win the Republican nomination.

Lott says Wednesday in Jackson that: “Trump just sucked all the oxygen out of 16 opponents.”

Lott was in the U.S. House 16 years before serving in the Senate from 1989 to 2007.

He originally supported Ohio Gov. John Kasich, one of his former congressional colleagues, for president.

Other prominent Mississippi Republicans, including Gov. Phil Bryant and party chairman Joe Nosef, also now say they are on board with Trump.

In a statement that doesn’t mention Trump’s name, Sen. Thad Cochran says he will support the Republican nominee to promote “individual liberty, strong national defense, secure borders and effective governance.”
