Video: Family Members Mourn A Tragic Loss

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI)- Friday night’s tragic shooting, which involved 23 year old Leonta Gates, who shot and killed a cab driver, 55 year old Charles Williams, still has family members devastated.

This tragic incident now leaves a family without a father, grandfather, and an uncle.

“It’s hard, for anybody to have a family member taken away from them like that, it’s very hard,” said Kelly Williams, daughter to Charles Williams.

Williams said she is still in disbelief, and she’s still having a hard time trying to wrap her mind around her father’s loss.

“Why? why would anybody want to do it,” she said.

But for Williams and her family, that question still goes unanswered.

“It was the worst feeling in the world to know my dad got murdered over nothing, over what? A cab?” said Williams.

Charles Williams had only been a cab driver for a few months. On Friday evening, he received a phone call to go pick up a customer, only to have it turn deadly.

“He was just trying to make money to get his truck fixed, that’s all he was trying to do and to make a honest living,” said Williams.

Williams describes her father as someone who can light up a room.

She said he would send her daily text messages simply saying, I love you, but now pain lingers over, knowing she’ll never receive another message from him again.

“It’s going to hurt. I’ve checked my phone every day waiting for a message, like every day,” she said “The last message I got from him was Thursday at 4 o’clock saying I love you, not getting that anymore is going t hurt really bad.”

Still on an emotional roller coaster, Williams said she tries to remember the good things about her father.

“Outgoing, adventurous, goofy, friendly,” she said.

To help her remain positive, in this difficult time.

“If you ask anybody about him, they would not have anything bad to say about him, he didn’t make any enemies,” said Williams.

Family members said Mr. Charles was a wrestler in the 80’s.  He loved his wrestling and loved bringing his children out to see him.

The funeral for Williams is set of Wednesday at 2 P-M.

If anyone would like to make donations to the family, you are asked to bring your donations to Holland Funeral Directors in Tupleo.
