Cindy Hyde-Smith sworn in as Mississippi’s first female senator
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WCBI) – Cindy Hyde-Smith has been sworn is as the first woman from Mississippi to serve as Senator.
Vice President Mike Pence administered the oath of office this morning, April 9, in the Senate chamber of the US Capitol.
Hyde-Smith, escorted by Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker, was named to replace long-time Republican Senator Thad Cochran.
Cochran retired April 1, citing health reasons.
Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant named the former state agriculture commissioner to the post.
A special election for the seat is scheduled in November.
