Community Action Group honors pioneers from Memphis Town in Columbus.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Those in Columbus are being honored for growth in the community, and a local organization is showing appreciation and gratitude for those who came before them.

The Community Action Group, also known as CAG, honored individuals from the Memphis Town community with its first tree planting ceremony.
Over a dozen Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to families.
The event was held at the Genesis Dream Center, which was formerly known as the Hughes Elementary School and is a huge staple in the Memphis Town community.
The festivities included not only the tree planting ceremony, but also a raised garden planting and free food.
Dorothy McClung Lewis and Mary Cook Lewis are involved with the event and the Community Action Group.
They said it is always important to honor those who paved the way for the community to flourish.
“Because a lot of times, the history that children need to have is not being taught in school,” Dorothy McClung Lewis said. “I’m a former school teacher myself, and this is history to know that these people planted seeds a long time ago, and now we are the offspring of those seeds that they planted.”
“I felt so honored to be asked to participate in this tree planting ceremony to honor the members they have passed on,” Mary Cook Lewis said. “We’re sure our children will look at this and will value what older ones have left for us to look after, and we think the committee for even having a ceremony like this to remember our deceased that has gone on in Memphis Town.”
A reception followed the tree planting ceremony.
