Lowndes Supervisors work with United Way to help the community
LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Representatives of the United Way of the Golden Triangle Region and its member agencies were on hand to thank Lowndes County Supervisors at their mid-month meeting Friday morning.
County governments are not able to provide direct funding to non-profit organizations, but with the approval of the State Legislature, they can provide money to organizations, such as the United Way that then fund other groups.
Supervisors have to get that approval renewed every few years through the Local and Private Legislation process in the Legislature.
The show of support was to remind the board who the money is helping.
Board President Trip Hairston says his colleagues should be the ones thanking the United Way, because they get the money where it really needs to go.
“It’s a further reminder that tax dollars being spent through these agencies are much better spent through the agency than they would be from the Board of Supervisors and our budget. They just know where to go with those funding mechanisms, and they’re able to do that. And you could say the same for the United Way. They know how to spread that dollar around to where it’s best used, much better than we could as a government entity. So, we’re very grateful to them in how they do those allocations.”
The United Way of the Golden Triangle Region serves seven counties and 24 member agencies
