Ribbon cutting ceremony held to celebrate grand opening of GTR communiversity

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A state of the art workforce-training center held its official grand opening.

On Friday, dozens of state and local officials were on hand in Lowndes County to get a firsthand look at the Golden Triangle Communiversity.

The Communiversity is operated by East Mississippi Community College

The first class of students enrolled in August.

The school offers students a chance to receive hands-on experience with machinery used by area industries.

School leaders said their goal is to have students trained for the workforce by the time they graduate.

“It’s so exciting,” said Dr. Scott Alsobrooks, EMCC’s President. “It’s a great message to tell the public that no longer to get to the middle class do you have to go get a four-year degree, you can come to a place like the Communiversity here at East Mississippi Community College and get a two-year degree and go out and get a great job.”

Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves was one of the featured guest speakers during Friday’s ceremony.
