Tuscaloosa Teacher Charged With Assault

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – A Tuscaloosa teacher and classroom aide are charged with abusing an 11-year-old autistic student.

Police say teacher Mildred Basye and Flora Bryant surrendered Thursday on misdemeanor charges of third-degree assault. Both worked at Oak Hill School.

The women were arrested after police investigated a mother’s complaint that her non-verbal child had been abused at school. Police say the parent was tipped off by an anonymous person who claimed the abuse had been going on since August.

Basye and Bryant are each free on $500 bond. Court records aren’t available to show whether either woman has a defense attorney to speak on their behalf.
