Video: The Many Roles Of A Teacher
A school teacher’s role involves more than just standing in front of a classroom and lecturing students.
Teachers, in fact, take on responsibilities of all kinds. In the last few years, however, teachers have been making headlines but not necessarily for the most positive reasons.
Lindsey Marsac is a first year teacher.
“I was nervous. Like, I was so nervous, the whole way over here. I’m from West Point and the whole ride to Columbus I was just shaking and nervous. It was an experience, I’ll says that,”said Marsac.
She says during her time in school, studying to be an educator, she quickly learned that students pay attention to more than just the lesson.
“We are an adult role model, just like any parent. I’m with these kids so often , more than they are with their parent. If I do something negative or something that’s frowned upon, they see that and think, Oh my teacher does that so it must be ok,”said Marsac.
Jim Ray is the Principal of East Webster County Elementary School and she says you can tell if a student had an impactful teacher by the way they transition from level to level.
” What these teachers do can determine how these students grow up. Moving on into a middle school environment on into a high school environment and how they succeed in that environment,”said Ray.
Shaping and molding the minds of the younger generation is an important task Marsac says another quality teachers should posses is teaching where every student can learn.
” You can’t expect to come in and look at each child and they have the same brain back ground same abilities because they don’t. You have to learn how to effectively teach 25 children who range in completely different academic abilities,”said Marsac.
Marsac says, to be able to leave a positive print on students, you have to care for them as they were your own.
” Yes, I’m here to educate, kids obviously. I love that and I have fun but I have two kids of my own at home. Now I have like 27 cause there are 25 in the class room, but it’s more than just teaching,”said Marsac.
According to Marsac, the best tool any brand new teacher can have is changing on the turn of a dime.
“You’ve got to learn to be flexible. I thought I had it all mapped out, I had everything planned. I’ve probably deviated 100 times from that. Being a teacher is being flexible,”said Marsac.
