Volunteers in Macon host turkey giveaway for holiday season

300 turkeys were donated to area residents

MACON, Miss. (WCBI) – Volunteers in Noxubee County were giving out free turkeys and sweet potatoes to the community.

State Senator Rod Hickman and Shared Health Insurance teamed up to donate 300 turkeys to area residents.

Community members line their cars around the Macon Civic Center to get their hands on the Thanksgiving Star.

Volunteers say this is just one way to serve surrounding communities during the holiday season.

Latonya Lyles is a sales manager for Shared Health.

She says this is the second turkey drive they have done during the giving season.

” Of course, you know there are several food desserts across the state of Mississippi. Noxubee County is one and with some of the devastation that happened this past year and last year, we just felt like it would be great to target this area. We have a lot of people who are unfamiliar with who we are as a plan and as a company, so what better way to start the season out than by giving away turkey,” Lyles said.

Shared Health will be doing more turkey giveaways before Thanksgiving.
