Young Chefs Cook Up Tasty Meal For Big Crowd In Choctaw County

CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- Students in the Choctaw County School District traded in their pencil and paper for a spatula and a skillet Thursday night.

Students in the culinary arts program at the Choctaw County Career and Technology Center cooked a tasty meal for the Choctaw County “Friends of the Library.”

Inside the Choctaw County Library, the young chefs whipped up some steaks with a creamy brown sauce, and followed it up with macaroons for dessert.

Program instructor Ashley Fondren said the experience is unique and allows students to showcase all of the skills they’ve learned.

“We’re giving them a foot in the door for industry in this state that is really looking for bright young minds to start working, so that’s what we’re doing with culinary arts,” said Fondren. “We’re giving students a good foundation for what’s important to know in the food service industry, and hopefully setting them on a course for success.”

“Tonight’s program is stellar because we’re also promoting something wonderful in Choctaw County which is our culinary arts program, and so we’re excited about featuring our students and that program that we have here locally,” said Deanie Graves, with Friends of the Library.

The Choctaw County Library has a number of cook books for those interested in making recipes like the one prepared by the students.

If anyone is interested, you’re encouraged just stop by the library and check them out.
