WINONA, Miss. (WCBI) — Many people can’t say that a highway is dedicated after them. Late, lifelong Winona citizen, Dewey Townsend and family, now have the privilege of saying that. The tarp being cut off the brown, Dewey Townsend dedication sign brings nothing but smiles to his family and friends. The dedication is made because of Townsend’s service to the town, country, and schools in Montgomery County. His widow, Olivia Townsend, couldn’t be more proud.

“Oh, it means so much, so much. I just hope he’s looking down and seeing it because he did work hard and if he wasn’t doing something to benefit others, you know, he just, just wasn’t right for him, so he was always, always doing something.”

Dewey Townsend impacted many people, including Mayor Jerry Flowers, who says the dedication brings much honor to the city.

“It get shows to citizens of Winona that all you, if you work hard and get an education, you can accomplish anything.”

Representative Bobby Howell says he’s proud to play a role in honoring Townsend.

“Usually the County Board of Supervisors or the mayor, and Board of Alderman will send their local representative that information and from that information they will introduce a bill, and that bill goes through the Rules Committee. They just present it to the House for approval or disapproval.”

A ceremony was held before the unveiling of the highway 51 dedication sign.
Scholarships in honor of Townsend were given to four college students which showcases his love for education.
Memories and accomplishments of the well-known man were also shared.
